Overview

EP801 replaced the original EP800 while retaining the compact, lightweight architecture that defined Shimano’s first EP8 generation.

The major changes were not simply additional torque. Both EP800 and EP801 reach 85 Nm, but EP801 increased peak power, broadened useful assistance across the cadence range, improved thermal management, expanded connectivity, and introduced much deeper integration with electronic shifting.

Shimano currently rates EP801 at:

The similar EP8 naming can make these motors appear nearly interchangeable, but they represent different system generations.

How It Works

EP801 sits at the crank area and applies motor torque through the bicycle’s chainring and conventional drivetrain.

The motor uses rider and bicycle inputs—including torque, cadence, and speed—to determine the appropriate assistance.

Because power passes through the drivetrain, gear selection remains important. A suitable gear allows both rider and motor to operate efficiently, particularly on steep or low-speed climbs.

The centralized position also keeps motor mass close to the bicycle’s bottom-bracket area rather than placing it in a wheel.

Assist Modes and E-Tube

EP801 uses Shimano’s ECO, TRAIL, and BOOST assist framework, with behavior configurable through E-Tube Project.

Two rider profiles can be stored, allowing different assistance characteristics for different terrain or priorities.

EP801 also supports Shimano’s Finetune Mode, which can provide as many as 15 user-configured assistance steps rather than relying only on the conventional three-mode arrangement.

Firmware has continued to expand these controls. Later EP801 updates added or refined functions including:

  • Assist carry-over behavior
  • Assist cutoff behavior near the speed limit
  • More aggressive assist-character options
  • Improved AUTO SHIFT behavior

An EP801’s software version is therefore relevant when comparing features between bikes.

AUTO SHIFT

With a compatible Shimano Di2 drivetrain, EP801 can automatically select gears using information available to the e-bike system.

Shimano currently lists supported DEORE XT Di2 and CUES Di2 configurations for its integrated shifting technologies.

AUTO SHIFT considers riding inputs such as:

  • Cadence
  • Speed
  • Rider torque
  • Acceleration and changing riding conditions

The rider can manually override automatic gear selection when desired.

AUTO SHIFT is therefore a drivetrain-system feature—not something the EP801 motor can provide with an arbitrary electronic derailleur.

FREE SHIFT

FREE SHIFT allows compatible derailleur systems to change gears while the rider is coasting.

EP801 briefly rotates the chainring as necessary to move the chain through the drivetrain without requiring the rider to turn the cranks.

This can allow the rider to prepare an appropriate gear before:

  • Exiting a corner
  • Entering a climb
  • Accelerating after a descent
  • Encountering a sudden terrain transition

As with AUTO SHIFT, compatible Di2 hardware and appropriate firmware are required.

Connectivity

Current EP801 documentation includes:

Shimano specifically describes the CAN and ACC connections as enabling third-party accessory integration.

That does not mean EP801 is an unrestricted open system.

Third-party batteries, displays, range extenders, or other components must be engineered and configured for the particular OEM bicycle system. A CAN connector does not make arbitrary e-bike components interchangeable.

Current examples reinforce this distinction: Canyon integrates EP801 with its own battery system, while Orbea uses EP801 RS with its proprietary RS battery and control architecture.

Battery Compatibility

EP801 uses Shimano’s second-generation battery-management architecture.

Rather than treating battery capacity alone as a compatibility specification, technicians and owners need to consider:

  • Battery-management generation
  • Battery mount
  • Wiring
  • Firmware
  • OEM configuration
  • Range-extender compatibility

A 630 Wh battery is not necessarily compatible merely because another EP801 bicycle uses a battery of the same capacity.

This becomes especially important with OEM-specific systems.

Wireless Communication

E-Tube Project Cyclist can communicate wirelessly with properly equipped Shimano e-bike systems.

However, Bluetooth or ANT connectivity should not automatically be attributed to the EP801 drive unit itself. Wireless communication depends on the other compatible communication, display, or control components installed on the bicycle.

This distinction matters when diagnosing a bike that will not connect to a phone or external device.

Assisted Speed

Maximum assisted speed depends on regional regulation and OEM configuration.

Shimano documents conventional 25 km/h configurations and compatibility with U.S. Class 3 applications where appropriately configured.

The drive unit’s maximum assist speed is established as part of the bicycle’s approved system configuration. It is not intended to be changed through ordinary user tuning.

The identical torque rating therefore does not mean the motors have identical performance envelopes.

Ride Characteristics

EP801 is designed to vary assistance proportionally with rider input rather than simply deliver maximum motor output.

Its behavior changes considerably with:

  • Assist-mode tuning
  • Cadence
  • Rider torque
  • Gearing
  • Firmware
  • Bicycle geometry and mass

For that reason, generalized claims that EP801 feels inherently “smoother” or “less powerful” than a competing Bosch, Brose, or DJI motor are poor encyclopedia descriptions. Different firmware generations and bicycle integrations can materially change the comparison.

Frame construction also influences how much motor noise or drivetrain rattle reaches the rider.

Notable Implementations

Verified EP801 applications include:

Canyon Spectral:ON – Current full-power trail e-MTB models use EP801 with Canyon’s OEM battery integration.

Canyon Torque:ON – EP801 is used on selected specifications alongside EP600 versions elsewhere in the range.

Orbea Rise – Uses Orbea-specific EP801 RS Gen2 configurations integrated with the company’s RS battery and control system.

Pivot Shuttle LT – Previous Shuttle LT generations were offered with EP801, although current Pivot specifications have moved to other drive systems.

These examples also demonstrate why motor specifications should always be checked by model year. An e-bike model name can remain in production while its drive system changes completely.

Mechanic’s Perspective

EP801 diagnosis should start with the complete system rather than the motor alone.

Check:

  • Error and warning codes
  • Battery and BMS generation
  • Speed sensor and magnet
  • E-Tube wiring
  • Di2 drivetrain compatibility
  • Firmware versions
  • Displays and switches
  • OEM-specific CAN devices
  • Physical connectors and wiring harnesses

Shimano specifies SM-PCE02 for PC communication with supported systems and E-Tube Project Professional for dealer-level diagnostics.

If AUTO SHIFT or FREE SHIFT is unavailable, confirm the drivetrain and firmware before diagnosing a drive-unit failure.

Drive-unit installation also affects mechanical performance. Shimano’s dealer procedure specifies the mounting sequence so the unit establishes its correct right-side position and chainline before the remaining mounting points are finalized.

There is also an EP801-specific detail worth knowing: Shimano identifies magnesium around the drive-unit cover mounting area and specifies the appropriate cover screws for use with that material. Substituting inappropriate hardware can accelerate corrosion.

Do not disassemble the motor beyond procedures explicitly permitted by Shimano. Internal drive-unit repair is not normal bicycle-shop service.

Shimano also advises against high-pressure washing of the electrical system. Water forced past seals can cause corrosion or operational faults even though the system is designed for normal wet-weather riding.
