Overview

Auto Shift transfers the decision of when to change gears from the rider to the bicycle’s control system. Instead of waiting for a button press, the system continually evaluates riding conditions and compares them with the selected shift profile.

If cadence falls below the profile’s preferred range, Auto Shift may select an easier gear. If cadence rises as speed increases, it may select a harder gear. Torque and speed information help the system distinguish between situations such as acceleration, steady cruising, and climbing under load.

Shimano automatic shifting did not begin with the latest e-MTB systems. Earlier Shimano STEPS drivetrains paired electronic internal geared hubs with automatic shift functions. The major 2022 development was extending more advanced Auto Shift behavior to compatible derailleur drivetrains through EP801, EP600, DEORE XT Di2, and later CUES Di2 components.

The current system is designed to reduce routine shift decisions without removing rider control. It is best understood as an adjustable gear-selection assistant rather than a transmission that always knows the objectively correct gear.

How Auto Shift Works

Sensor Inputs

Shimano’s e-bike Auto Shift system primarily monitors:

  • Cadence: How quickly the rider is turning the cranks
  • Torque: How much force the rider is applying
  • Speed: How quickly the bicycle is moving
  • Gear position: The current drivetrain ratio

The system does not normally measure trail or road gradient directly. It infers climbing conditions from changes in torque, cadence, speed, and acceleration.

Shift Decision

Auto Shift compares current sensor data with the active profile. Its decision is influenced by settings such as:

Shift Execution

Once the system selects another gear, it commands the Di2 derailleur or hub motor unit to shift.

While the rider is pedaling, the drive unit can coordinate assist output with the gear change to reduce chain load and help the shift complete cleanly. This does not make the drivetrain immune to damage from wear, misadjustment, or excessive load.

When the rider is coasting, compatible systems use Free Shift. The drive unit rotates the chainring and cassette without requiring pedal rotation, allowing the derailleur to complete the automatically selected shift.

Auto Shift While Pedaling

Auto Shift while pedaling continually manages gearing around the configured cadence and load preferences.

Typical behavior includes:

  • Shifting to an easier gear as cadence falls under increasing load
  • Selecting a harder gear as cadence rises with speed
  • Adjusting shift response during sustained climbing
  • Maintaining a broadly consistent pedaling rhythm over rolling terrain

A shift is not triggered by cadence alone. Torque and speed help prevent the system from responding identically to every brief cadence change.

Auto Shift While Coasting

Automatic shifting during coasting relies on Automatic Free Shift.

When the rider stops pedaling but the bicycle remains in motion:

  1. The system determines that another gear is appropriate.
  2. The Di2 derailleur moves toward that gear.
  3. The drive unit rotates the chainring and cassette.
  4. The chain completes the shift without pedal rotation.

This is particularly useful while:

Starting-Gear Functions

Derailleur Systems

A derailleur-equipped bike cannot normally complete a shift after the rear wheel has stopped. Automatic Free Shift therefore selects the starting gear while the bicycle is still rolling and decelerating.

The Start Gear setting establishes a lower limit or preferred range for the gear selected during this process.

Internal Geared Hubs

Compatible Di2 internal geared hubs can provide a separate Start Mode. Because the ratio change occurs inside the hub, supported systems may select the programmed starting gear after the bicycle stops.

This is true standstill shifting and is mechanically different from derailleur-based Free Shift.

Auto Shift Settings

Shift Timing

Shift Timing adjusts the cadence behavior around which automatic shifts occur.

A rider who prefers spinning at a higher cadence can select a different setting from one who prefers slower pedal rotation. It should be treated as a rider-preference adjustment rather than an efficiency score.

Climbing Response

Climbing Response changes how the system reacts when the drivetrain encounters high load on a climb.

If the bike holds a difficult gear too long, this setting may need adjustment. If it downshifts more aggressively than the rider prefers, a less responsive setting may feel better.

Riding Scene

Some configurations provide riding-scene options such as pavement or MTB. These alter the automatic behavior to suit steadier road use or more variable terrain.

Start Gear or Start Mode

Start Gear applies to compatible derailleur systems as the bike slows. Start Mode applies to supported internal geared hubs capable of changing ratios at a stop.

Profiles

Many EP801 and EP600 systems allow separate automatic profiles—commonly Auto 1 and Auto 2. These can be configured for different uses, such as commuting and trail riding, and selected through the bike’s controls.

Manual Override

Auto Shift does not eliminate manual control. On compatible systems, the rider can operate the Di2 shift switch to override the current selection.

Depending on the configured mode, automatic control may resume after the manual shift. Riders can also switch from an automatic profile to fully manual Di2 operation.

Manual override is useful when the rider can anticipate something the sensors cannot see, such as:

  • A rock ledge
  • A jump or drop
  • An upcoming corner
  • A short, steep pitch
  • A surface change
  • A planned acceleration

Auto Shift reacts to measured riding conditions. It does not visually examine the trail ahead.

Auto Shift vs. Free Shift

The two functions address different parts of shifting.

Free Shift

Provides chain movement so a shift can be completed without rider pedaling.

Limitations

It Cannot See Upcoming Terrain

Auto Shift responds to sensors, not visual trail information. It cannot know that a jump, corner, or sudden obstacle is approaching until riding conditions change.

Tuning Matters

A poorly matched Shift Timing or Climbing Response setting can make the bike feel as though it shifts too early, too late, or too frequently.

Compatibility Is Complex

Different derailleur speeds and drivetrain families support different combinations of pedaling Auto Shift and Automatic Free Shift.

Efficiency Gains Are Not Guaranteed

Maintaining an appropriate cadence may improve comfort or motor operation, but no universal battery-range improvement applies. Terrain, rider input, assist level, tires, load, and speed remain major range factors.

Electronics Remain Necessary

At low battery, Shimano systems shut functions down in stages. Power assist and Free Shift stop before ordinary electronic and automatic shifting. Once electrical power is exhausted, a Di2 drivetrain cannot shift mechanically because it has no shift cable.

“Auto Shift and Free Shift Are the Same”

Auto Shift selects the gear. Free Shift moves the drivetrain when the rider is not pedaling.

“Auto Shift Only Works While Pedaling”

Compatible systems can shift automatically while coasting through Automatic Free Shift.

“The System Measures Gradient”

It normally infers climbing load from torque, cadence, and speed rather than using a dedicated slope sensor.
