Overview
E-TUBE PROJECT is the service and configuration layer behind many Shimano electronic bicycle systems. It provides access to settings that cannot be changed mechanically, including switch assignments, multi-shift behavior, synchronized shifting, motor-assist profiles, and selected automatic-shifting functions.
The software’s documented history is older than commonly stated. The names are related but refer to different things.
E-TUBE
E-TUBE is Shimano’s electronic system architecture. It includes:

How It Connects
Bluetooth LE
E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist connects wirelessly through a compatible component equipped with Bluetooth LE.
Depending on the system, the wireless access point may be located in:
- A rear derailleur
- A cycle computer or display
- A wireless unit
- An e-bike system component
The presence of Di2 does not automatically mean Bluetooth connectivity is available. Some older systems require an additional wireless unit, while others can only be accessed through a wired service connection.
Wired PC Connection
E-TUBE PROJECT Professional uses a supported Shimano PC-linkage device, most commonly the SM-PCE02. This is not an ordinary USB-to-E-TUBE cable. Wiring Generations and Compatibility
Shimano currently has two major E-TUBE connector families.

Firmware Management
Each electronic component contains its own firmware. A bicycle may therefore contain several different firmware versions at the same time.
Firmware updates may:
- Correct documented faults
- Improve communication stability
- Add support for compatible components
- Refine motor or shifting behavior
- Enable specific functions
- Resolve version conflicts
An update should not be assumed to add every current feature to older hardware. New functionality may require different electronics, sensors, wiring, batteries, derailleurs, or drive units.

Interrupted Updates
Wireless firmware updating introduces a risk that does not exist with ordinary mechanical service. If Bluetooth communication is interrupted while firmware is being written, the affected unit may stop communicating normally.

Di2 Customization
Available Di2 settings depend on the drivetrain generation. Supported functions may include:

AUTO SHIFT and FREE SHIFT are not software-only upgrades.

A recorded code does not automatically prove that the named component has failed. Communication errors may result from:
- Damaged E-TUBE wires
- Partially seated connectors
- Contaminated ports
