Begin with the problems that can stop a test ride: an unsecured wheel, damaged tire casing, cracked rim, badly worn rim-brake track, or missing and loose spokes. A small lateral wobble may be repairable. Structural rim damage or a tire with exposed casing is a different decision, and neither should be dismissed as “just needing a tune-up.”
Inspect both wheels in good light before riding. Dirt can hide cracks around spoke holes and dried sealant can disguise the source of a slow leak, so use a clean rag where needed.

Make sure each wheel is attached correctly
Confirm that the wheel is fully seated in the frame or fork. A thru-axle should be the correct type, pass cleanly through the hub, and secure without damaged threads or improvised spacers. A quick-release skewer should clamp firmly with the lever in a position that cannot contact the frame, fork, or disc rotor. Bolt-on axles need the correct hardware on both sides.
Look for a wheel that sits off-center, an axle that does not seat completely, or a rotor that changes position when the axle is secured. Poor installation, wrong end caps, dropout damage, hub play, or alignment can cause this. Pull laterally at the rim and hold the frame or fork near the axle to help locate any knock. Do not ride until the source is known.
Read the tire markings before judging compatibility
Photograph each tire’s full size marking. The ISO format, such as 57-622, identifies nominal width and bead-seat diameter in millimeters. Labels such as 700C, 29 inch, and 26 inch are useful descriptions, but bead-seat diameter is the safer compatibility reference.
Confirm that front and rear sizes make sense for the bicycle. Some modern mountain bikes intentionally use a 29-inch front and 27.5-inch rear wheel. Older bicycles can have inch labels shared by several incompatible rim diameters. A tire that fits the rim may still be too wide for the frame, fork, brake, or mudguard clearance.
Check pressure with a gauge. A soft tire can hide a puncture, damaged tube, failed tape, leaking valve, dried sealant, or dented rim. If it cannot hold safe inspection pressure, do not ride. Follow limits and setup guidance for the actual tire, rim, and bicycle.
Inspect the tire casing, tread, and bead
Turn the wheel slowly and examine both sidewalls and the complete tread. Look for:
- Cuts or abrasion that expose casing threads
- A bulge, blister, or local change in shape
- Cracking at the sidewall, tread edge, or around the bead
- A torn or distorted bead
- Sealant escaping through a cut rather than light casing porosity
- Large plugs, internal boots, or repairs whose condition cannot be confirmed
- Uneven wear caused by rubbing against the frame, fork, brake, or another component
Tread differs by use. Rounded or torn knobs can reduce mountain-bike traction, while a road tire may have little tread when new. Clearer replacement signs are exposed protection material or casing threads, structural cuts, bulges, bead damage, and serious cracking.
Inspect the tire where it meets the rim. The molded line above the bead should generally sit at a consistent height. A section that disappears below the rim or rises markedly can indicate an unevenly seated tire, damaged bead, tube trapped under the bead, rim damage, or incompatible parts. Deflate and inspect it properly before riding if the seating problem does not correct safely.
Spin the rim, not just the tire
Lift one end of the bike and spin the wheel. Watch a fixed point on the frame or fork against the rim edge or brake track. Check for side-to-side movement and a vertical hop. Then watch the tire separately. An uneven tire can make a sound rim appear out of round.
A modest lateral deviation may be trued if the rim is undamaged and tension can be balanced. A sharp flat spot, large dent, cracked spoke hole, split seam, or buckle changes the repair. Inspect carbon rims for cracking, separation, crushed areas, or deformation; photographs and tapping cannot clear questionable damage.
Disc-brake rims still need structural inspection. On rim-brake wheels, check for deep grooves, cracking, flared sidewalls, and a concave profile. Find the manufacturer’s wear indicator if present. Shimano instructs users to stop using certain rims when its indicator hollow disappears. Other rims need their own documentation or qualified measurement.
Also inspect the brake pads for embedded metal or grit that may be cutting the rim. Replacing pads does not restore a brake track that has already worn too thin.
Check the spokes without pretending your fingers are a gauge
Look for broken, bent, corroded, or loose spokes and cracking or distortion at each spoke hole. Compare adjacent spoke pairs only to find a large outlier; feel and tone do not supply a tension value, and left-to-right tension often differs by design. One loose spoke may accompany a bent rim, damaged nipple, or poor overall balance. Have trueness, dish, tension, and rim condition evaluated together.
Feel the hubs and freehub
Spin each wheel and listen near the hub. Grinding, binding, or a repeating rough spot deserves attention, but seal drag means spin time alone proves little. Check lateral play at the rim and hub. The need may range from adjustment to bearings, axle, or hub replacement. On the test ride, coast and resume pedaling gently; the freehub should engage without slipping or unpredictable delay. Its volume is not a condition test.
Confirm what “tubeless-ready” means on this bike
An Archive specification or rim decal marked tubeless-ready describes capability, not the setup in front of you. Ask whether tubes are installed, which sealant was used, when it was checked, and whether the tire has needed repeated inflation.
Look for leakage around the valve, bead, spoke holes, and punctures. Damaged tape, a loose valve, or failure to hold pressure needs service. Sealant life varies; Stan’s gives a broad two-to-six-month average for its standard product. Follow the product actually used. A plug may or may not be permanent, but sealant cannot make bead damage, exposed cords, a bulge, or serious sidewall damage acceptable.
Use a short test ride to confirm the inspection
After the wheels are secure and the tires and rims have passed the stationary checks, ride in a clear area. Start slowly. Notice a rhythmic bump, side-to-side wobble, vibration, bearing grind, rotor or rim rub, and any movement when cornering gently. Stop if a tire changes shape, a wheel shifts in the dropout, or the bike feels unstable.
Recheck both axles and tire pressures afterward. A pressure drop during a short ride matters even if the leak is not visible.
Decide what the finding changes

Its specification analysis may translate a wheel label into an ISO bead-seat diameter or flag a mixed-wheel system. Use those facts to identify what the manufacturer documented and which compatibility questions to ask.
They cannot show whether the current wheel is original, a spoke is loose, the rim is cracked, sealant is fresh, or a tire has been ridden underinflated. Compare the physical parts with the Archive record, then fold the repair estimate into the complete used-bike inspection. If the wheels pass, continue with drivetrain wear before discussing price.
