How the Assist System Works
Panasonic electric-assist bicycles generally use sensors to detect rider input and control motor output accordingly. The exact sensor arrangement, motor position, software, and assist modes depend on the drive-unit generation.
Japanese electric-assist bicycles operate under a regulated assistance curve:
- Below 10 km/h, motor assistance may be as high as twice the rider’s input
- Between 10 and 24 km/h, the permitted assistance ratio progressively decreases
- At 24 km/h, motor assistance stops

This low-speed emphasis is well suited to starting from traffic lights, climbing at utility-bike speeds, and moving loaded bicycles. It differs from systems designed primarily around sustained assistance at higher European or North American limits.

On Panasonic’s Japanese utility models, riders are most likely to notice strong assistance during starts and low-speed climbing. Panasonic systems must be identified by exact bicycle model, drive-unit generation, battery number, display, charger, and sales region. The Panasonic name alone is not enough to establish compatibility.
