Overview
Brose entered cycling from the automotive industry rather than the traditional bicycle-component business.
The company had extensive experience producing electric motors for automotive applications, including steering systems. Beginning in 2011, Brose engineers adapted this experience to develop a bicycle mid-drive. Series production began at the company’s Berlin facility on July 15, 2014. Brose company history
This background influenced the Brose approach to e-bike design. Rather than concentrating solely on maximum output, the platform emphasized controlled assistance, relatively low mechanical noise and flexibility for bicycle manufacturers.
Brose also gave OEM manufacturers considerable freedom over batteries, displays, software and frame integration. This allowed companies to create distinct riding experiences around Brose hardware, but it also created more variation in compatibility and servicing than exists in some tightly standardized e-bike ecosystems.

Brose Drive Architecture
Brose motors are mid-drive systems positioned around the bicycle’s bottom bracket. Motor and rider torque are combined at the crank and transmitted through the bicycle’s normal drivetrain.
The controller uses inputs including:
- Rider torque
- Pedaling cadence
- Wheel speed
- Selected assist level
- System and temperature data
Firmware determines how those inputs are translated into motor assistance.
Internal Belt Drive
One of Brose’s defining engineering features is its internal belt-based transmission.
The belt forms part of the motor’s reduction system and contributes to the relatively smooth engagement and low mechanical noise associated with Brose drives.
It is sometimes described as a “Gates carbon belt,” but this should not be confused with the external Gates Carbon Drive bicycle drivetrain. Unless a specific motor’s component supplier is documented, the more accurate description is simply an internal reinforced drive belt.
The internal belt is enclosed within the motor and is not a routine rider-service item.
OEM Integration
Brose’s OEM flexibility was both a strength and a source of complexity.
Bike manufacturers could integrate Brose hardware with their own:
- Batteries
- Displays
- Controls
- Wiring
- Firmware
- Smartphone applications
- Frame layouts
This meant a Brose-equipped bike did not necessarily behave like another bicycle using the same underlying motor.
Earlier Brose installations were especially modular. Later, Brose expanded toward a more complete ecosystem; by 2023 the company officially described the Brose Drive System as comprising the drive unit, battery, display and app.
This evolution makes model year important when identifying Brose-equipped bicycles.

Drive S Mag
Drive S Mag became the best-known Brose performance motor.
It combines:

- Performance-oriented e-MTB tuning
It appeared in numerous trail and all-mountain e-bikes and also served as the hardware foundation for manufacturer-specific systems.
Specialized and Brose
Specialized is probably the most recognizable example of Brose’s OEM approach.
The second-generation Turbo Levo’s Specialized 2.1 motor used Brose Drive S Mag-derived hardware combined with Specialized-specific firmware, batteries, wiring and controls. Specialized technical documentation identifies Drive S Mag motor types with the Specialized 2.1 system.
Later Turbo Full Power 2.2 systems continued the Brose relationship but remained Specialized-specific systems rather than generic Brose motors.
This distinction is important in service work. A Specialized motor should be identified by its Specialized system and part information rather than treated as an interchangeable standard Brose drive.
Ride Characteristics
Brose motors became known primarily for three characteristics.
Low Mechanical Noise
The internal belt transmission reduces some of the gear noise and vibration associated with conventional reduction systems. Actual motor noise still varies with load, cadence, frame construction and component wear.
Progressive Assistance
Brose systems generally allow motor support to build with pedal input rather than behaving as a simple on/off power source.
Because OEM manufacturers control much of the firmware, however, power delivery can vary considerably between bikes.
Low Resistance Above the Assist Limit
Brose’s internal drivetrain architecture was designed to decouple motor assistance smoothly when the motor is inactive or the bicycle exceeds its legal assistance speed. This contributes to a more conventional pedaling sensation than early generations of some mid-drive systems.
Notable Applications
Specialized Turbo Levo
Second-generation Levo models used Specialized’s custom 2.1 system based on Brose Drive S Mag architecture. Later Full Power 2.2 systems continued the Brose-derived platform with further Specialized integration.

Numerous BULLS E-Stream models used Drive S Mag and other Brose drive variants, often combined with BMZ batteries and manufacturer-specific displays and controls.
Service and Compatibility
The Brose name alone is not sufficient for identifying replacement components.
A mechanic should establish:
- Bicycle manufacturer and model year
- Exact motor model and part number
- Battery system
- Display and control architecture
- Wiring generation
- Current firmware
- OEM-specific service requirements
Different brands may use closely related Brose motors while having incompatible batteries, firmware or electronic components.
The internal belt, bearings and reduction components are also not conventional external bicycle service items. Internal motor work should follow the applicable OEM or authorized drive-unit service procedure.
Mechanic’s Perspective
Brose bikes reward a system-first diagnostic approach.
Before assuming the drive unit has failed, check:
- Battery condition and communication
- Speed sensor and magnet alignment
- Wiring and connectors
- Display and controls
- Stored fault codes
- Firmware compatibility
OEM integration is the biggest trap. A Specialized 2.1-equipped Levo, a BULLS and a ROTWILD may all contain Brose-derived hardware, but that does not make their electrical systems interchangeable.
Even replacement drive units should be matched by exact part number and application rather than simply by the words “Drive S Mag.” Motor orientation, firmware and OEM configuration can differ.
Legacy standard Brose systems continue to be supported through the organization that became QORE. QORE states that the existing 36V Service Tool remains available for older Brose products and that legacy replacement parts continue through established service channels. Specialized systems remain subject to Specialized’s own service procedures.
Brose E-Bike Business After 2025
Brose is still a major German automotive supplier, but it no longer owns the bicycle drive business described in this article.
