The range combines Bosch mid-drive systems with aluminum frames, hydraulic disc brakes, integrated lighting, fenders, rear racks, and comfort-oriented contact points. Many models use low-step frames and upright riding positions, while the Ultimate and Eclipse families provide a more active posture for riders covering greater distances or riding at higher assisted speeds.

Gazelle occupies the premium end of the transportation e-bike market. Riders generally consider one for its complete equipment package, established Bosch system, dealer support, and carefully integrated design. The tradeoff is considerable weight, relatively high pricing, and more complexity than a conventional bicycle or a basic hub-motor e-bike.

What Gazelle Makes

Gazelle builds and assembles its bicycles at its factory in Dieren, the Netherlands. The company’s global catalog is broader than the U.S. selection, so models shown on European Gazelle websites may not be available or supported through American dealers.

Comfort Before Minimum Weight

Gazelle treats an e-bike as a complete transportation bicycle rather than a minimal platform awaiting accessories. Full-length fenders, permanently wired lights, sturdy kickstands, rear racks, suspension forks or seatposts, wheel locks, adjustable stems, and enclosed or low-maintenance drivetrains are common across the range.

This equipment makes the bikes practical from the first ride, but it also adds weight. Several current models are listed at roughly 60 pounds before the battery is installed. A low-step frame makes mounting easier, but it does not make the bicycle easy to lift onto a rack, carry upstairs, or pedal home without assistance. Buyers transporting one by car should check the rack’s per-bike weight limit and whether the frame shape is compatible with its holding mechanism.

Drivetrain choice also changes the ownership experience. Chain-and-derailleur models provide familiar shifting and can be serviced by most competent bicycle shops. Gates belt systems avoid chain lubrication and pair with Shimano internal-gear or Enviolo continuously variable hubs, but correct belt tension and rear-wheel installation require more specific knowledge. Enviolo shifting is smooth and stepless, although it feels different from selecting distinct gears and adds cost and weight.

What to Know Before Buying

Choose between Class 1 assistance to 20 mph and Class 3 assistance to 28 mph before comparing individual components. Gazelle’s U.S. bikes are pedal-assist models without a throttle. Class 3 access can be restricted on certain paths and trails, so more speed is not automatically the better choice.

A test ride is particularly valuable. “Upright,” “active,” and “sportive” describe noticeably different positions, and an adjustable stem cannot correct a fundamentally unsuitable frame size. Confirm that the rider can start, stop, turn, and handle the bicycle comfortably with cargo before relying on the published size recommendation.

Battery range figures are estimates rather than guaranteed mileage. Assist level, hills, temperature, tire pressure, total load, wind, and stop-and-go riding can change the result substantially. Compare battery capacity and charger output as well as the headline range. A larger battery can extend trips but increases the weight being managed when parking or transporting the bike.

Current models primarily use Bosch systems, including Bosch Smart System components on newer bikes. Diagnosis, firmware work, motor service, and certain electronic replacements may require a Bosch-equipped dealer. Record the frame number, battery key number, motor generation, display, and battery model; these details become important when ordering parts or evaluating a used Gazelle.

Many models include an AXA-style ring lock, but immobilizing the rear wheel is not the same as securing the bicycle to a fixed object. Check whether a compatible plug-in chain or cable is included, and use an appropriate primary lock for the parking conditions.

Gazelle is most likely to suit a rider who wants a polished, fully equipped e-bike for regular commuting, errands, and recreational mileage, with comfort taking priority over minimum weight. Someone seeking a throttle, a budget-priced direct-sales bike, easy stair carrying, cargo-bike capacity, or genuine off-road capability should look elsewhere.
